Cardoso,Vera Lucia; Lima,Maria Lucia Pereira; Nogueira,José Ramos; Carneiro,Raul Lara Resende de; Sesana,Roberta Cristina; Oliveira,Elisa Junqueira; El Faro,Lenira.
The objective of this study was to calculate economic values for milk (MY), protein (PY) and fat productions (FY) and somatic cell count (SCC) which could be used to compose an economic index to rank animals involved in an international genetic evaluation program of Holstein cattle used in the commercial dairy population in Brazil. The main milk production systems (MPS) prevailing in the South and Southeast were defined based on the feeding management and production level of herds. To calculate feeding costs, energy requirements for the production of one kg of milk with the respective average protein and fat contents of each MPS were calculated. Feeding costs were obtained based on the regional prices of the diets' components. To calculate revenues, milk...

Genetic gain estimated by different selection criteria in guava progenies Bragantia
Paiva,Claudia Lougon; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Santos,Eileen Azevedo; Freitas,Josie Cloviane Oliveira; Amaral Junior,Antonio Teixeira do.
Abstract Guava plays an important role in Brazilian agribusiness. Among other goals, guava breeding programs aim to achieve more productive cultivars and improved fruit quality. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate genetic variability in full-sib progenies of Psidium guajava (guava) and estimate the genetic progress obtained from different selection criteria in order to select the most promising genotypes. This is the first work that uses these criteria of selection to guava. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design with 2 replicates, and 10 progenies were assessed, with 12 plants per plot. Direct and indirect selection and the classic index with 2 economic weights were used for predicting the genetic gain between and within...

Ribeiro,Larissa Pereira; Carvalho,Luiz Paulo de; Farias,Francisco José Correia; Rodrigues,Josiane Isabela da Silva; Teodoro,Paulo Eduardo; Bhering,Leonardo Lopes.
ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to estimate the predicted genetic gains with the simultaneous selection of agronomic and technological traits from elite cotton lines using selection indexes. Data from the evaluation of 36 elite lines were evaluated in three trials located in Apodi-RN in 2013 and 2014 and Santa Helena, GO, Brazil in 2013, in a randomized block design with two replicates. The agronomic traits evaluated were: plant height (PH), average boll weight (ABW), percentage of fibers (PF) and seed cotton yield (YIE). In 20 bolls from each experimental unit, the following technological fiber traits were evaluated: fiber length (UHM), fiber uniformity (UNIF), short fiber index (SFI), fiber strength (FS), elongation (ELON), micronaire (MIC),...

New insights into genomic selection through population-based non-parametric prediction methods Scientia Agricola
Lima,Leísa Pires; Azevedo,Camila Ferreira; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Suela,Matheus Massariol; Nascimento,Moysés; Viana,José Marcelo Soriano.
ABSTRACT: Genome-wide selection (GWS) is based on a large number of markers widely distributed throughout the genome. Genome-wide selection provides for the estimation of the effect of each molecular marker on the phenotype, thereby allowing for the capture of all genes affecting the quantitative traits of interest. The main statistical tools applied to GWS are based on random regression or dimensionality reduction methods. In this study a new non-parametric method, called Delta-p was proposed, which was then compared to the Genomic Best Linear Unbiased Predictor (G-BLUP) method. Furthermore, a new selection index combining the genetic values obtained by the G-BLUP and Delta-p, named Delta-p/G-BLUP methods, was proposed. The efficiency of the proposed...

Procedures for identification of superior progenies in successive generations of evaluation in common bean Scientia Agricola
Lemos,Roxane do Carmo; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto.
ABSTRACT: When breeding the common bean in Brazil, the best progenies are chosen, normally, from solely the generation under analysis at the conclusion of the evaluation, without considering what occurred in the past. However, a number of recently published studies show that if an evaluation were to consider all relevant generations, the gain from selection could be higher, especially when an index that involves information from the population that gave rise to the progenies is used. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare three selection procedures in the evaluation of successive generations and to discuss the implications of the progeny × environment interaction in terms of success of selection. Cycle XV progenies from a bean recurrent selection...

The continuous gains in cycles of recurrent selection have raised disagreement among researchers. Two hundred and forty-two full-sib families were obtained from CIMMYT and Piranão populations and evaluated in a simple lattice design in two environments to estimate the response to selection in the 11th cycle of the UENF reciprocal recurrent selection program. No genotype x environment interaction was observed for most of the traits evaluated, indicating that a single recurrent selection program can be conducted for both sites. The population studied exhibited wide genotypic variability and heritability estimates ranged from 33 to 73%, indicating prospects of selection gain for the following cycles. The predicted genetic gain in yield was 12.90%. It is...

Yield components and reproductive, physiological, and root traits used in early selection for nitrogen use efficiency in corn PAB
Morais,Pedro Patric Pinho; Sousa,Massaine Bandeira e; Galli,Giovanni; Andrade,Luciano Rogério Braatz e; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto; Oliveira,Aluízio Borém de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to examine the possibility of using yield components and reproductive, physiological, and root traits in early selection for nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in corn. Sixty-four inbred lines were evaluated under two nitrogen fertilization levels: ideal and low. The evaluations were performed at three phenological stages: eight fully-expanded leaves, tasseling stage, and physiological maturity. It is possible to select superior lines for NUE, but the yield components did not show differential behavior under the different nitrogen levels evaluated. Root, reproductive, and physiological traits are not promising for early selection of corn lines with high NUE. Likewise, the eight-leaves and tasseling stages were not...
